Ramateertham is one of the places associated with Lord Sree Rama. The temple and village are located at the base of a chain of solid rock hills that contain several recurring springs of water as well as other Rama-related sites.

Ramateertham is a village panchayat in Andhra Pradesh’s Vizianagaram district’s Nellimarla mandal. Vizianagaram city is about 12 kilometres away. Since the 3rd century BCE, it has been a well-known pilgrimage as well as an ancient historical site.

History of Ramatheertham Sri Rama Temple

This temple dates from the third century. The Bavikonda Hills are where it is located. Between Bhaskara Lake and Neelachalam Hills, the River Champa flows beneath the hill. The idols in the temple were installed by the Pandavas during their 12-year exile. Ramasthoopam was installed in the temple by Sri Pedda Jiyar Swamy. In addition to Buddhist monasteries and Jain Thirthankars, Ramatheertham is known for its Buddhist monastery. Turtles with Vishnu Namam marks can be seen roaming the temple grounds. There is a Shiva temple nearby, which was built in 2007.

Architecture of Ramatheertham Sri Rama Temple

The ancient and famous temple of Ramachandra Swami, which is said to be over 1000 years old, is located in Ramatheertham.According to some evidence found in this area, Ramatheertham is also known as a Buddhist site. The remains of a large Buddhist Mahastupa measuring 19 feet high and 65 feet in diameter can be seen near this temple, on a black hill known as Gurubukhata konda.

A monastery, Chaitya, Monastic cells, two votive stupas, a solid stone stupa, an enclosed courtyard, and a pillared hall can all be found on this hill. Nearby, on the same hill, under a massive hanging rock, the ruins of a brick shrine with images of Jain Thirtankaras and several Jain sculptures can be seen.The lovely Champa River flows at its foot between Bhaskara Lake and Neelachalam Hills, and Sri Rama Temple is located in Ramatheertham, on the Bavikonda Hills.

The temple is entirely carved out of a massive rock. The Pandavas installed and worshipped the idols in this temple during their twelve-year exile in the forest. The idols are now covered in silver Kavacham, which is used for daily rituals. In this temple, Pedda Jeeyar installed a Rama Sthambam.

Rituals and Poojas at Ramatheertham Sri Rama Temple

The timings for this temple are 5.00 AM and 8.00 PM. The Lord Rama rituals are mostly performed during this time. The daily pujas include Archana, Aarti, and Abhisekham.

Sri Ramanavami, which falls in April, and Vaikunta Ekadasi, which falls in May, are both observed with religious fervor.

  • By Rail: Vizianagaram Railway Station, which is 14 km away, is the nearest railway station. There are buses that run to the temple.
  • By Air: The closest airport is Visakhapatnam Airport, which is located 73 kilometres away. To get to the temple, you can take a bus or a taxi.
