The Erra Matti Dibbalu are segmented and stabilised coastal red sediment mounds between Visakhapatnam and Bheemunipatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
In Telugu, this area is known as “Erra Matti Dibbalu,” which translates to “Red Sand Hills.” It is bordered on the north-west by the Chitigadda River and on the south-west by the Peddagadda River.
These Erra Matti Dibbalu are one of Visakhapatnam’s natural resources. The Indian Geological Survey is assisting in obtaining geo-heritage site status for these locations.
Formation of Erra Matti Dibbalu
Erra Matti Dibbalu were formed due to sea-land interaction around 12,000 years ago.
Comprises a mixture of sand (40-50 percent ), silt and clay (another 50 percent ) with oxidation imparting the unique red colour.

They are one-of-a-kind due to the scarcity of gullied red dunes formations, of which only three exist in Southeast Asia. It took thousands of years for these to form.
