Borra Caves are one of the country’s largest caves, located in the Ananthagiri mandal of the Visakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh.
These one million year old caves, discovered by William King George of the Geological Survey of India, attract a large number of tourists every day and have become one of Vizag’s major attractions. Formation of Borra Caves
Among the tribals who live here, there are a few legends about how the caves were discovered. Borra caves were discovered, according to legend, by a cowherd looking for his lost cow. Inside the cave, he discovered a Shiva Lingam, and he believed that Lord Shiva had rescued his cow.
Outside the cave, the villagers built a small temple, which is frequented by visitors. Another popular belief is that the Shiva Lingam found here had a cow-shaped stone formation above it, and the udder of this cow is thought to be the source of the Gosthani river, which flows through Vizag.
Borra Caves were formed by the Gosthani River flowing through limestone deposits. Shiva-Parvathi, Rishi’s Beard, Mother-Child, Crocodile, Human Brain, Tiger, and Cow’s Udder are just a few of the stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations found in these caves.
The bats that live in Borra Caves eat flowers and fruits like jamun, guava, and mango. The caves, which are beautifully lit by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, have an enchanted appearance.
