This park, snuggled in the Kambalakonda Forest Reserve and surrounded on three sides by the Eastern Ghats, is one of Andhra Pradesh’s largest zoological parks, spanning 625 acres and home to at least 80 species of wildlife.
On May 19, 1977, this zoological park, named after India’s former Prime Minister, opened to the public. It has since become one of the most popular destinations for visitors who enjoy seeing wildlife in its natural habitat. A mini-train runs through the park, allowing visitors to see all of the attractions.
The park’s closeness to the Bay of Bengal makes it an ideal spot for spotting a variety of exotic bird species. The weather and climatic conditions in this area have allowed the zoo’s wildlife to flourish and provide a healthy environment for the animals.
This park has been divided into separate sections for carnivores, primates, ungulates, mammals, and birds, which is one of the park’s unique features. This division allows visitors to more easily visit each section based on their interests.
This zoo also has a section for butterflies and moths, but it is only open during the early hours of the day because butterflies and moths cannot fly at night. To make the visit even more interesting and to raise awareness about these creatures’ characteristics, the walls of this section are covered with information about them.

Visitors can take a short train ride around the park. It not only saves the trouble of walking around the park on foot, but it also provides a fun adventure for the kids. The lion perched atop his cave and the baboons squealing with delight as they hang lazily from trees can be seen as the train travels through all of the zoo’s sections.
On days that celebrate wildlife, nature, and the environment, such as World Wildlife Week, World Forestry Day, and World Sparrow Day, the park hosts a variety of activities. At the park, there is an education centre called ‘Bioscope,’ which works to raise public awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation.
Park Timings and Availability
The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mondays are the only days when the park is closed.
Zoo Park Entry Fee
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park entrance charges Rs. 20 for adults and Rs. 10 for children. The still camera fee is Rs. 20 and the video camera fee is Rs. 100.
You can also drive your car inside the park for Rs. 200 for up to 5 people. Otherwise, for Rs. 30 per adult and Rs. 10 per child, you can rent a battery-operated car inside the zoo.
