President Ram Nath Kovind presented Prasanna Sree, an Andhra University (AU) professor from Visakhapatnam, with the Nari Shakti Puraskar in New Delhi on Tuesday. The English professor was recognised for her contributions to the preservation of tribal languages. She is also the first woman to create alphabets for 19 tribal languages in India.
She decided to offer Adivasis languages a script in order to provide them a way to preserve their traditions and music. Dr Prasanna Sree, a member of the Tribal people herself, is fluent in English, Telugu, Hindi, and Bengali. She said that there was always a tremendous reluctance to do something for the Adivasis, and that she had a strong command of numerous languages thanks to her experience of living in various states with her father, who worked in the railways.
Prasanna expressed his delight at the Indian government’s recognition of her contribution. “Our ultimate aim is to implement these languages into academics so that Adivasi students can feel at ease in the school.”
She considers the reserved community to be the society’s first people, believing that these languages are on the edge of extinction and must be preserved in their original form. The dedicated professor is determined to continue her work and safeguard the survival of many other tribal languages.
