Mrs. A.V.N. College is an arts and science college in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India, that was founded in 1860.Mrs A.V.N. College holds the record of being one of the few colleges in South India that performs best at meeting the educational and cultural needs of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Few colleges in the United States can boast of a more diverse and rich alumni than this 140-year-old institution. Sir C.V. Raman, the first and foremost Nobel Laureate, graduated from this institution. Sri V.P.Rama Rao, IAS, Former Chief Secretary, unveiled Sir C.V.Raman’s bronze bust on April 4, 1991.
History of Mrs.A.V.N.College
The institution began as a school in 1860 and grew with the help of the public, particularly the zamindars of the time.In 1886, it was upgraded to the status of a college in the name of Hindu College as a second-grade college affiliated with Madras University, with a European headmaster, When the school was elevated to the status of a college, Hindu College, as a second-grade college affiliated with Madras University, Mr. E. Winckler took over as principal.
Messrs. H. H. Anderson, R. S. Sheppard, W. Ramaiah, and P. T. Srinivasa Iyengar was among his successors. In memory of his wife, landlord Ankitam Venkata Narasimha Rao endowed Rs one lakh, an 11-acre plot of land, and a massive structure in 1892. Mrs. A.V.N College was born as a result.
In 1878, the college was founded with a student body of 50.The institution celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in 1938. The college had 227 students and the high school had 732 in 1938–39.
Administration of Mrs.A.V.N.College
On December 1, 1993, Ms. Indrani Jagga Row, vice-chairperson, was appointed as the college’s correspondent. With the consecration of Lord Shiva in the temple built by Shri A. V. N. Jagga Row within the college grounds, she made a holy start to her activities. Sri A.V. Adeep Bhanoji Row, Indrani Jaggarow’s son, was appointed as correspondent in 2014, and Indrani Jaggarow resumed her role as vice chairperson. According to the founder Sri A. V. Narasinga Row’s will, the Visakhapatnam district magistrate has the authority of chairperson.
Mrs.A.V.N.College’s Academics
The institution turned 100 years old in 1960. The college used to have a limited number of subject combinations at the Intermediate level, but now it has a large number of subject combinations at both the Intermediate and Degree levels. Restructured courses such as Biochemistry, Fisheries, Electronics, Computer Science, and Statistics were introduced in the B.Sc. Every year, students from the college excel in the IIT, EAMCET, EDCET, AUCET, LAWCET, Civil Services, and university examinations.
The institution’s current courses include Primary and Secondary Schooling, Intermediate (formerly PUC), UG Courses (B.Sc., B.Com. ), U.G. Course (M.Com. ), Diploma in Engineering (Polytechnic), and Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed.). Diploma courses were first offered in 2012.
In 2018, the peer review team gave the college an NAAC-grade.
