History of Hindustan Shipyard Limited
The Scindia Shipyard was built as part of the Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd by industrialist Walchand Hirachand. Walchand chose Visakhapatnam as the location for the yard’s construction, and the yard was completed in November 1940. The shipyard’s foundation stone was laid on June 21, 1941, by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the acting Congress President at the time.
The first ship built entirely in India after independence was the Jal Usha, which was built at the Scindia Shipyard. In front of the families of Scindia Shipyard partners Seth Walchand Hirachnd, late Narottam Morarjee, and Tulsidas Kilachand, as well as other dignitaries and businesspeople, it was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1948.
Walchand died in 1953, but the Scindia Shipyard continued to thrive under the direction of the founders’ relatives. In 1961, the shipyard was nationalised and given the name Hindustan Shipyard Limited.
From the Ministry of Shipping to the Ministry of Defence, HSL was transferred in 2010. The yard was instrumental in the creation of the Arihant class submarine, which is nuclear-powered.
